Call for entries to the AA Award of Excellence

01 June 2004

PRESS RELEASE London, 1st June 2004

The AA is searching for its 'Travel Writer of the Year' as it introduces an award of excellence for the first time in its 25-year history of producing travel guides.

In partnership with the British Guild of Travel Writers, the AA has devised a brand new award, the 'AA/BGTW Travel Writer of the Year Award' for a 'Major Contribution to Consumer Travel Writing'. The award, open to all Guild members, has a prize value of £2,000, plus a writing commission with AA Publishing. In addition, a prize of £1,000 will be given to one highly commended writer.

"The AA is Britain's largest publisher of travel guides and we feel it is fitting that we should recognise the enormous contribution travel writers have made to AA guides and those of other publishers," says Stephen Mesquita, General Manager, AA Publishing. "Our award will seek out the best in the current pool of writers and recognise their excellence, encouraging them to continue the work they are so obviously passionate about."

Melissa Shales, Chairman of the British Guild of Travel Writers, is delighted to welcome the AA's generous sponsorship of this new award. "It is wonderful to have a premiere award which will show the diverse range of a writer's ability. The AA has provided so much work for our members for many years. This new partnership is ideal, highlighting both the professionalism of the AA's books and the huge talent of our membership."

Entrants must supply a minimum of four and a maximum of eight pieces of work published between 1 September 2003 and 31 July 2004. Together they should make up a minimum of 4,000 and a maximum of 6,000 words, published in any magazine, newspaper or on the internet, aimed at the consumer.

The award will be judged by an independent panel of judges from the travel trade and media.

The deadline for entries is 16 August 2004 and the awards will be presented at the BGTW Awards Dinner at The Savoy on Sunday 7 November, the eve of World Travel Market.

"Curious male onlookers make photography difficult in Pakistan, but although my own temper rose, people were never aggressive. In Jacobabad, I traced a line in the dust and told three hundred tribesmen to stand behind it. Which they did. Such orders would never be tolerated in another country, but there was always laughter - at my expense - for the sight of the tall, angry woman photographer was more fun than the cinema!"
