Europe's Most Perfect Garden
Guild member Nicky Gardner is on a quest, as she searches for Europe's most perfect garden. Last year she spent several days exploring every corner of Tresco (with its famous Abbey Garden) in the Isles of Scilly. Now she's off to spend a whole week at the Giardini Botanici Hanbury (at La Mortola just inside Italy east of the French Riviera coastal town of Menton). How does it feel to have one of Europe's most fabulous gardens to oneself, as the last visitors of the day leave and the gates are closed for the night? Thomas Hanbury, who founded the gardens (and gifted Wisley in Surrey to the Royal Horticultural Society) was one of the most outstanding horticultural visionaries of the nineteenth century. Anyone who thinks that the aroma of cinnamon can be found only in the spice markets of South Asia will get something of a pleasant surprise at the traditional Christkindlmaerkte (Advent markets) of Munich in Bavaria, Germany. Traces of that tantalising scent can be found wafting through the crisp winter air, from the wooden stalls currently standing on Marienplatz in the heart of the city.
