Flying over Vitebsk
Remember Marc Chagall's wonderful paintings of Belarusian cottages? Nicky Gardner is just back from Vitebsk, the town in Belarus where Chagall lived for much of the first thirty years of his life. Nicky has been exploring the lost Jewish world so evocatively depicted on Chagall's painting. Dachas and rebbes, the fiddler on the roof, and scenes that defy the laws of physics (eg. Chagall's iconic 'Flying over Vitebsk'). Nicky will gladly pen Belarus features or photo-essays that capture Vitebsk's Chagallian heritage. “Slow, slow wanders the train, past minarets and mosques, out onto the plains where women dressed in black work in fields that are as neat as a grave on the day of its digging. There are plum trees and pear trees, half-built churches and telegraph poles that wait for the new season’s storks.”

By Nicky Gardner, writing about spring in northern Bosnia in the May 2008 issue of hidden europe magazine (page 15). Courtesy of hidden europe magazine (www.hiddeneurope.co.uk).
