In Search of Elvis, by Charlie Connelly

elvis.jpg'Since his death in 1977, Elvis Presley has become an even greater cultural icon than when he was making records and consuming deep-fried peanut-butter-and-banana sandwiches,' says Charlie, author of In Search of Elvis: A Journey to find the man beneath the jumpsuit.

In his new book, published by Little Brown, Charlie sets out to discover what makes Elvis so significant today and how his spirit is being kept alive more than half a century after he changed popular culture for ever.

Charlie's odyssey takes him across the globe to meet a whole cast of colourful characters including a Finnish academic who performs Elvis songs in long-dead languages while wearing a kilt and an orthodox Jewish Elvis tribute artist – Schmelvis – in Canada. Finally, he stays at the Heartbreak Hotel and records a song in Sun Studio, the very room where Elvis arguably invented rock'n'roll.

Underground, we hold candles to light our way through a labyrinthine approach to the rock-hewn monolithic churches. Suddenly the sunlight floods in through arched windows illuminating colourful murals depicting stories from the Bible. Angels, devils and saints observe us shuffling on the cobbles on bare feet. A priest appears, dressed in sumptuous crimson robes and holding aloft one of the silver crosses of Lalibela. He dons sunglasses to protect his eyes as our cameras start to flash, and he grins like a Hollywood A lister caught by the paparazzi.
