Istanbul, Black Sea and Georgia |
|
I will be travelling to Istanbul in early April to spend a week there before moving on to the Turkish Black Sea coast and finally to Georgia. I'll be looking at some of the 2010 European Capital of Culture's less well-known corners away from the usual tourist circuit, and in Georgia will visit Batumi, Kutaisi, Svaneti and, of course, the delightful capital Tbilisi. Requests for words and images welcome.

I co-wrote Frommer's Wales With Your Family and I'm involved in more writing and editing projects for Frommer's. Read more... |

"Mr Safi Ullah was a tall thin man in white beard and white punjabi. He gave me tea and a copy of the headmaster’s report from 1948. As I left I pressed him to accept a 1000 taka note – a little less than £9. “For books,” I insisted. He took it under protest. “For books,” he agreed. I reflected afterwards that I had given him enough to keep a 10-year-old in school for a year."
