After three months living in Los Angeles and travelling around California (Santa Barbara, San Juan Capistrano, Hearst Castle, Santa Cruz and the Bay Area) Carolyn is back in London briefly before heading to Italy. She can tell readers what’s hot on the West Coast from food (Bazaar at SLS) to hotels (Four Seasons Biltmore, SB) to hip locations (up- and- coming Oakland). Now she’s going to check out her house in Umbria, just down the hill from the Italian museum of Painted Eggs.

Off to Istanbul to check out the glories of
Constantinople as well as the attractions of the modern city. Fleshly as well as intellectual treats await, like a real Turkish bath and the finest food in Eastern Europe.

Into the wilds of Croatia |

I shall be spending most of June exploring the mountainous hinterland of Croatia as part of research for a book I'm writing. I'll be in the region of Lika, where my parents come from, and which is little known to tourists apart from the Plitvice National Park. It was also where the 1990s civil war in the former Yugoslavia began, and where things are slowly picking up after years of turmoil. I plan to write travel articles on the region as well, so I am happy to hear from editors who want an insider's guide to a part of Croatia that is a world away from the crowded Dalmatian coast. Israel's top hotels - the good, the bad and the ugly |

I've just inspected every four- and five-star hotel in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Eilat, including some brilliant new boutique hostelries, for an American guidebook, and have lots of material for destination pieces/eating out guides/business travel/where to stay and what to do for all three towns.
All are now weekend break destinations with the advent of low-cost flights, and Tel Aviv celebrates its centenary next month.

"Apparently Ranger was a bit of a ladies dog - the Steve Owen of Alaskan Huskies – intent on making sudden amorous advances towards anything with four legs and a fur coat. This was fine in his own time but not when pulling a slightly overweight journalist over the icy terrain of Swedish Lapland. The last thing this slightly overweight journalist needed was to be tipped from his sled into a frozen lake, even in the name of canine romance."
