WRITING FOR THE INTERNET

In the last few years I have written a lot for websites, including starting two of my own.

U.K._Ireland_Travel___Suite.jpgSearch Engine Optimization
I am the UK/Ireland Feature Writer for the online magazine Suite101 (left), which attracts over 24 million readers a month. In over two years now of writing for Suite on all kinds of destinations (not only the UK and Ireland) I have learned all about SEO (Search Engine Optimization). As a result of this, many of the pieces I write for the magazine appear on the first page of Google search results for the chosen Keywords, a fact which has surprised and delighted many PRs, hotels, publishers and other organisations.

As an example of effective internet writing, one review that I did on Suite101 in March 2007 of the Michelin Guide to Paris is still, two years later, being read by over 300 people every week. Google 'Michelin Restaurants in Paris' and you might even find it ranking #1 on Google. And a review I did of a resort in Greece in April 2007 is still being read by about 600 people each month. I wonder if that can be said of an article in a two-year-old newspaper or magazine?

Recently I visited Lennoxlove House in Scotland. Two days after the visit I posted a piece on Suite101, and within an hour of being posted it was the number one result on Google for anyone looking for an exclusive-use country house in Scotland.

Good internet writing not only brings long-lasting results it brings immediate results - no waiting on a newspaper or magazine to get round to publishing it, maybe 12 months later.

And here are the articles I've written for Suite101 since September 2006:

Writing for the internet is not as elegant and stylish as writing for print, but it is much more effective in attracting readers via search engines like Google.

Using what we learned in writing for Suite101 and other websites, my wife and I have started our own website devoted to America's wonderful Pacific Coast Highway (right). This drive has been called one of the greatest free attractions in the United States, and here's the website link:

As a result of the success of the first website, and the sheer pleasure we get from publishing it ourselves, we started another one devoted to Greece:
Greece Travel Secrets.

And two more websites are on the way....
