THE USA
I have a home in Arizona and spend half the year there, usually escaping the British winter to enjoy the 70-degree sunshine south of Tucson, not far from the Mexico border. I have a Green Card, making me a Resident Alien, and so with a base in the States I can travel and work there as much as I like.
I've written many newspaper and magazine pieces about subjects including Hank Williams's Alabama, the Unclaimed Baggage Center, the road to McCarthy in Alaska, Orlando's 'gators, Tampa's wildlife by canoe, the Grand Canyon, Memphis, Nashville, and the movie locations in Mississippi... which gave me the chance to dine with Morgan Freeman. For The Times I've also written a Gumshoe's Guide to the USA and sampled the biggest wine cellar in the world, which is in Tampa in Florida.
My wife Donna Dailey and I publish a website devoted to the Pacific Coast Highway and in March 2009 we drove every mile of the highway from San Diego to Seattle. This was partly to update the route for the Insight USA On the Road guide, and also to gather more material for our website. We have also written or updated books on Denver (Insight), Chicago (AA), Los Angeles (Berlitz), the US South West (DK), and New York (several books).
