Surrey-born Sarah Woods began her freelance career whilst travelling coast-to-coast across Australia in the early 1990s. Her dispatches about Uluru, the Northern Territory and shark-diving earned her a slot on backpacker radio while pieces on tree-top eco spas and vineyard safaris were picked up by magazines across the world.
Today Sarah is a full-time freelance travel writer, editor, author and travel editorial consultant across a broad range of consumer and trade titles - in the UK and overseas. In 2007-2008, she contributed to over 30 magazines worldwide with tales of off-the-beaten-track adventure, news of emerging destinations, reviews of the latest luxury spa resorts and features that centred on exotic high-end tours.
As features editor for Caribbean World magazine, Sarah is no stranger to romantic palm-scattered honeymoon isles yet remains a die-hard adventurer at heart. In 2007 she trekked the Amazon jungle through Colombia, Brazil and Peru and in 2008 traversed Panama's wild, tangled Darien region to spend time with indigenous Kuna, Embera and Ngobe Bugle tribes. She also wrote about eccentric, quirky bars in Bogota and Bocas del Toro for the Sunday Times and ate deep-fried ants for the Miami Herald.
In recent years Sarah's ad-hoc projects have included podcasts, documentaries, travel TV, radio and film. In 2007 she was awarded the Kenneth Wescott Jones British Guild of Travel Writers prize after winning Travel Guide Writer of the Year in 2005. During 2008-2009 Sarah has worked on five solo travel books (Colombia, Dubai, Romantic Destinations & Spas, Adventure Weekends and Panama) and has also contributed to numerous collaborations and anthologies. Sarah is a dedicated supporter of SOS Children Villages for orphaned and abandoned children in Panama and Colombia and sponsors two centres for over 100 children in David and Bogota.
Sarah is also a seasoned vetran of world spa culture from Northern US new age principals and traditional Eastern ethos to sublime Middle Eastern R&R luxury style. Her articles on spa travel have appeared in Traveller, Travel Body & Soul, Holiday, Sundeck, Escape, Luxury Travel, 101 Romantic Weekends in Europe and Women's Health. Sarah has also worked on TV pilots about ancient well-being practices, boot camp retreats, health-giving organic therapies and eco-pampering. She has been doused in liquid clay, immersed in mud and beaten with birch twigs in the name of good health - and has interviewed a host of medical shaman, witch doctors and touch therapy gurus.
In 2009, Sarah will journey from Venice to London in the nostalgic Pullman carriages of the Orient Express, abseil urban Rotterdam's heights, canoe along Panama's caiman-laden River Chagres and learn aged spa rituals from Caribbean islanders on beach-hemmed San Andres. She is currently working with New Holland on a book about the world's greatest cycle journeys and will write about gastronomic breaks, wine and fashion travel for a soon-to-be-launched upscale monthly title. Sarah will also journey the Suez and Panama Canals.
