The Tontine Hotel, Peebles by Mike Gerrard |
|
Snippet of the week: the Tontine, Peebles
Our weekly feature on a place Guild members have found on their travels. Mike Gerrard highlights a favourite hotel.
'Ah, the Tontine,' a fellow Guild member said to me when I told him we were going there for a couple of days. 'One of my favourite hotels,' he confirmed. Mine too, and in one of the loveliest of the Scottish Borders towns, Peebles. To be able to stroll along the High Street and down to the banks of the River Tweed, and watch herons, swans, ducks and other waterfowl, is magically relaxing.
The Tontine was built by French prisoners of war between 1806 and 1808, when the Napoleonic wars were in full swing. The original cobblestones are still there, and it's the only building on Peebles High Street to have its own courtyard. Driving onto those cobbles to unpack the bags and check in is, I know, going to be the start of a totally relaxing time. Ah, the Tontine...

Helicopter pilot Francisco made a quick announcement. “Is everyone up for a low-level pass of the ship? If you are, I need to see all six hands up in agreement!” Six arms were immediately raised in excited accord. And, with no further ado, our Bell 407 helicopter roared down to wave level (or so it seemed) and completed a high-speed fly-by of our sea-going home of the past week, the MV Atmosphere.
